Presidents Corner

Nicole Zamparelli

Nicole Zamparelli-Schiavone RN-Owner-Administrator

A Wildflower Assisted Living & Care Home INC

Happy Summer everyone! I hope everyone reading this newsletter is finding some overdue, well-deserved time off and if you haven’t found the time remember we have to take care of ourselves so we can take care of others! For those of you that don’t know me my name is Nicole Schiavone and I’m the President of CALA. In my spare time Im also the owner and administrator of A Wildflower Assisted Living and Care Home. We have been providing support for those living with brain injuries since 2007. We wanted to take some time in this newsletter to introduce you to the board and update you on how hard the CALA board and committees are and have been working to support all of you.

President update- I think the CALA board has finally got a bit of rest after the past several years of COVID and we are catching up with all the nuts and bolts of the association. We have been reviewing and updating by-laws, restarting the quarterly newsletters, planning upcoming IN PERSON Conferences, happy hours and education, scheduling our annual Membership meeting (must be a member to attend so make sure your membership is current) and so much more so make sure to read the updates below. My focus has recently been on scheduling a summit to speak with other associations in hopes to identify our shared concerns for the industry and share them with the Governor, CDPHE and HCPF. We all know there is strength in numbers so please continue to share your concerns with us and attend our town halls.

Government Relations Committee

Janet Cornell

Janet Cornell is the current Chair Person for GRC. Janet operated 8 group homes for 14 years and is now owner of Senior Care Administrator Coaching LLC. Janet has been in the Senior Care business since 2002. She assists group homes with consulting and training.

This year the committee worked very hard to defeat SB22-154 Increasing Safety in Assisted Living, which will go into effect January 2024. CALA did not feel this bill correctly addresses safety issues.  Even though it passed, the committee learned a great deal about the process and met a number of legislatures along the way that are supportive to our industry.

We followed a number of bills that will influence our industry.

SB22-079, Dementia Training Requirements for direct care staff of Assisted Living Facilities did pass.

SB22-053 Health Facility Visitation During a Pandemic did pass, which allows at least one visitor for a patient in a health care facility or a resident in an Assisted Living facility during a Pandemic.

Next legislative session we hope to be able to be more influential in our legislative process to pass legislation that supports the Assisted Living Industry and enhances the opportunities for small business in Colorado. More updates about this will be coming.

Education Committee

Peter Brissette

Peter Brissette, CALA Executive Director

We provided many well attended educational “Tuesday Trainings” this year and we thank those who provided guidance for our industry. Some of the topics included The What’s and Whys of QMP Made Simple, Fire Safety Update, Labor Law Update, The Sky Is Falling and the State is Coming, Managing Employee and Resident Records.

If you missed these great sessions, the recording is still available on the CALA website.

CALA also participated in the Collaboration in Aging Convention in February, the first in person event for almost 2 years. It sold out and the reviews were wonderful. This was our first attempt at a conference involving others in the spectrum of caring for people.

Our Associate Member Assured Partners Senior Living has also provided support of our Tuesday Trainings through great programming such as Fall Prevention, Managing Medication Errors and others. We are excited to be offer more trainings from our amazing associate members in the future.

Tid-Bit Tuesday is a hit and has provided little “morsels” of regulation of things that get over looked or are buried in the regulations.

In the upcoming year, we have many great educational opportunities as well as a one day in person event this Fall.
