Week One: The Business and the Facility


In the first part of week one we will discuss all that is required from a business standpoint to be compliant with regulations for an Assisted Living facility. In the second part of the week, we will review what the facility must implement to be compliant and ready to operate the facility.


Day 1: Monday-The Business: (Part 1)

Day 2: Tuesday -The Business: (Part 2)
∙ Business plan / Service Model

∙ Marketing for Success
∙ Managing the financial aspects of the business and Plan B
∙ Wrap up on how to run the Business while being compliant with regulations
∙ Draft a simple budget for your home from the outline given and discuss

Day 3: Wednesday-The Facility: (Part 1)

∙ Review of Policies and Procedures- minimum standards and how to write these.
∙ Chapter 2 and Part 4 QMP how to write one, understand how to use it
∙ Quality Management Program – how to write one, understand what is required, and how to use it
∙ Emergency Preparedness ( Part 10 Chapter 7 ) Understand the elements
∙ Homework, make a simple draft of your QMP from the outline given in class


Day 4: Thursday-The Facility: (Part 2)
-Review a couple of QMP samples from the homework and discuss
∙ Understanding what is required to meet regulations for Pest Control, Waste Disposal, and Interior and Exterior Environment
∙ How to Inspect your facility for compliance issues
∙ Review of House rules – How to draft these
∙ Food and Dining Services – differences between expectations with small and large facilities

Week 2: The Staff and Residents


During the first part of week 2, we will review the staffing process. Requirements for recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, and ethics in Caregiving. The 2nd part of this week will be focused on Resident Care including a compliant move-in process.


Day 6: Monday-The Staff (Part 1)
∙ Review Part 7 – Personnel and Part 8 - Staffing Requirements from Chapter 7


- Discuss challenges in the industry


∙ PowerPoint on Onboarding employees
∙ Review of an Orientation Training sheet
∙ Resources for training staff (YouTube, Co-Train and other applications.
∙ Reporting requirements, incident reports, occurrence reporting, and mandatory reports for abuse and neglect.

Day 7: Tuesday–The Staff (Part 2)
∙ Review of Chapter 24
∙ Ethics in Caregiving- 101
∙ Infection Control
∙ Food Safety and how to manage this for a small facility design an easy menu
∙ External Service providers such as Home Care, Hospice, physicians, PT/OT
∙ How to keep staff records current and compliant (QMP)
