Thats right we are 41 days into the 2016 legislative session giving us 99 days remaining to act on 447 individual pieces of legislation. And to no one's surprise their are still over 100 pieces of legislation that have yet to be introduced into the Colorado Senate and House. The Colorado legislature still has a tremendous amount of work to be done before it finishes up its work on May 11th.
The CALA legislative committee, chaired by Clark Griep, has been hard at it since the session began in January. The committee is tracking 20 individual bills that affect the assisted living industry in some form or manners. Each week the committee comes together for its weekly conference call to review bills, determine the position of the association on each bill, and formulate policy on the issues being considered by the body. The six member committee does a great job helping us stay on top of all the legislation.
Besides managing the 20 bills we are tracking, The association has taken the initiative to introduce two pieces of legislation. SB16-078, "Concerning Continuing Competency for Administrators and Directors" and a bill that will privatize the QMAP program currently being run by CDPHE. SB16-078 has been assigned to the Senate Business Affairs Committee and has not been scheduled to be heard in committee. Our other bill is in the drafting office being written for later introduction into the House. We are going to need your help in getting these two bills passed through the legislature. Watch your emails for important "Call to Action" announcements. When you see them please respond quickly. Your participation in the process will help get the legislation passed.
Please be reminded that you can see all the legislation that the association is working on by going to the CALA web site and going to the legislative section. You can see in real time, all the legislation that we are working on and how it is moving through the legislative process.
Before closing out our update. I want to remind all of you to get to know your state senator and representative. Take a minute and reach out to your senator and representative. They are working hard for you and they like hearing from their voting and business constituents.
If you have questions about CALA's Legislative Program please give us a call. The committee and myself, are here to answer any of your questions.
