Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. Educational methods include storytelling, discussion, teaching, training, and directed research.
As young children we are excited to go to school, see our friends and learn new things. As we grow older learning isn’t always fun, but turns into a necessity for the job, to raise a child, to fix a broken item, to plan a trip – thus in reality… “school is never out.”
If asked, our society would not go to a professions such as a heart surgeon, a tax accountant even a hair stylist, who didn’t invest the time to keep up on the latest research and techniques so that the duties they performed were in line with current practices and/or trends.
As parents we stress the importance of education to our children however make excuses for ourselves. “I am just too busy, I don’t have time to sit through a class, go to a conference or read a book.” The greatest leaders will plan into their schedule time to further educate themselves. For some it is planning to go to a one or two day conference a couple of times of year. For others it is as simple as taking 5 – 15 minutes a couple of times a week to quickly read an article or a chapter in a book.
As professionals we have to understand that in order to stay ahead of the competition, continue to motivate our teams, strengthen the trust of our customers and maintain our credibility we must commit to ongoing education.
Education is and always will be the foundation in which we foster growth within ourselves and others.
